What is Helsinki's best playground? Where can you find a play park suitable for older children too? And a playground close to the city center? Helsinki has over 200 playgrounds and more than 60 play parks. But do you know where to find one of Helsinki's newest playgrounds?
This article was first published in August 2024.
The park surrounding the Sibelius Monument has been undergoing major renovation for a long time and was still partly under construction at the time of writing. But in the second week of August 2024, the gates to the Sibelius Park playground at the edge of the park finally opened, and the renovated and updated playground once again welcomed children to play. And what a wonderful place it turned out to be!

The main attraction of the Sibelius Park playground is a large climbing structure, which has influences from the climbing structures in Venny Park and in front of the Central Library Oodi. However, the overall structure is slightly easier than Oodi's difficult frame that suits only the truly daring, and it includes many easier climbing elements. The design language fits well with the park named after the composer: the gently undulating shape of the frame is like a series of chords moving in the wind. Pienten Helsinki's playground critics on the team could hardly be persuaded to leave the playground because of the climbing frame—it was so popular even with school-aged children.

Another attraction is a group of six swings, a circular swing element similar to the one in Lovisholm Park in Sörnäinen but smaller. This is nice, although the placement creates a small challenge near the entrance gate. With small children, you need to be careful here, as there are swings in several places. An adult can also fit in this swing and at the time of testing it was very popular among different age groups. Unfortunately, there is no baby swing in this swing structure, but the playground does have one separate baby swing on the side.

In addition to the swing and climbing frame, the park named after Sibelius naturally also has musical instruments and particularly well-sounding ones at that. There is also a sandbox with an excavator, a collection of several small trampolines (Pienten Helsinki's young critics did say the trampolines weren't the best possible in this park though), a separate baby swing, and a small slide. The playground, located among large conifers and sheltered by a rock outcrop, was a wonderful experience in the August evening sun at least. Behind the park, on the other side of the fence, there is also a separate outdoor gym.

The playground is partly rocky and follows the natural contours. Children are also left space to climb on gentle rock outcrops and to explore under the trees by balancing on logs. In the playground itself and in the surrounding park there are several picnic tables for a packed lunch outing. We also headed there for an evening picnic with our food, and how wonderful it was to eat in the shade of large trees!

Sibelius Park playground is extremely suitable for slightly older children. It offers something for the very little ones too, but it may not be quite as functional with the tiniest children. At the time of our visit, the playground was busy, so there was clearly a need for it, and the location will certainly attract visitors from further afield as well.

Sibelius Park playground is completely fenced. In addition to the preserved rock outcrop, rubber-like mats and increasingly popular wood chips are used as surface materials. The color palette is earthy, but with this location, it's certainly a deliberate choice. Fortunately, the play equipment shows more boldness, and this play park too has unique and different elements.
We certainly liked it, so we recommend a trip to Töölö!
