The Helsinki places featured in Little Helsinki’s stories and articles are now available in one place as a directory. Wonderful places, fun attractions, plenty to see and experience with children - Helsinki’s treasures! The basis for this story is One Hundred and One Places in Helsinki, but good attractions for children are added to the list frequently. The story contains a lot of insider knowledge about Helsinki with the goal of creating a comprehensive directory of Helsinki’s places.

MUSEUMS

Amos Rex

This new museum in the Glass Palace works wonderfully with small children too. Amos Rex welcomes young museum visitors with open arms, but check in advance which exhibition is on display at the time, as not all exhibitions may be suitable for the very young. You can also move around with strollers in the museum. The museum's hills at Lasipalatstilaukio square are also worth trying out! Ateneum

The Ateneum Art Museum is a classic in the city center, where you will almost always find exhibitions suitable for children, Finnish art treasures, a good child care room, and occasional art workshops for children. A wonderful place to visit and marvel at art and the art world. Accessible entrance to the museum is from Ateneuminkuja street. You can move around with strollers in the museum, and the youngest member of the Little Helsinki team has slept many afternoon naps under the museum's ceiling paintings. Design Museum

The Design Museum on Korkeavuorenkatu has invested significantly in children in recent years and organizes family days and workshops for children. Museum entrance fee; under 18s free. The Design Museum operates in an old school building.

Helsinki Fire Museum

The Fire Museum at Erottaja Fire Station showcases the history and present day of the rescue services. An often overlooked attraction where there's plenty to marvel at for both children and adults, and you're guaranteed to spot fire engines here. The location is perfect: right next to an actual rescue station! Small entrance fee. The museum closes in July-August, otherwise open mainly on Wednesdays and Sundays.

National Museum of Finland

The National Museum of Finland and its exhibitions are also suitable for young children: princesses, kings, Finnish history in engaging forms, and the museum's Attic, which is a place for children. However, check the Attic's opening hours on the museum website as they vary! The National Museum also has a chatty mammoth and a talking stone - can you find them? Museum entrance fee; under 18s free. Open in winter almost without exception from Tuesday to Sunday, in summer also on Mondays. You can move around with strollers in the museum. Natural History Museum

In the Natural History Museum, young museum visitors are well taken care of. There are many types of small tasks, things to try and explore, you can peep into nests under snow by crawling through a snow tunnel, and listen to fish talking on a phone. Have you seen dinosaur bones? Or bears up close? A nice place for the whole family! You can move around with strollers in the museum, and there is also a special parking area for them. Tram Museum

The Tram Museum next to Töölö's tram depot is a museum where you can mostly touch and try most of the museum objects. The museum has several trams from different decades and other related artifacts. The space is accessible, moving with strollers is allowed, and there is a child care room in the lobby as well as space for eating snacks etc. Always free admission.

Newspaper Museum

The Päivälehti Museum is an interesting and well-executed look at the history and present day of media and print products. The summer 2020 new exhibition takes you on adventures in Koiramäki. The exhibition has been designed with children in mind and there's plenty to do and explore for all ages. The museum's printing cellar is also worth experiencing. Kaisaniemi Botanical Garden

The giant water lilies and carnivorous plants familiar from children's books, along with other curiosities, await right next to Helsinki Railway Station. The magnificent old greenhouse and recently renovated outdoor gardens are Helsinki treasures in a central location. Moving with strollers in the greenhouses is challenging, though not prohibited. Kindergarten Museum

The Kindergarten Museum in Sörnäinen, in the Ebenesser house, is a wonderful place designed with children in mind. At the museum, visitors learn about children's history, play, and kindergartens in Finland by playing shops, homes, and cafés. You'll also find out what Froebel blocks are. The museum is open from August to June on Wednesdays and occasionally on Saturdays in connection with events. There is a storage place for strollers in the courtyard area. Small entrance fee for adults.

Theater Museum

The Theater Museum is suitable for children and exhibits are well thought out for them. Here you can also touch and try, dress up, and participate. The museum organizes event days for children quite often on weekends and during holidays. Currently, the Taikina Taju exhibition is on display. Entrance fee.

Helsinki City Museum and Children's City

The Helsinki City Museum has a fresh appearance and well-executed exhibitions. Special mention goes to the museum's hall's living room-like space where you can pop in for snacks, relax and marvel, charge your phone, dress children's outdoor clothes in peace, or even wait with a sleeping child while others explore the museum. The Children's City is wonderfully unique, a place where everything from details has been thought through from the perspective of small visitors. The museum also hosts events for children. There is a weather-protected stroller parking outside, you can move around with strollers in the museum itself, but moving with strollers in the Children's City section is a bit challenging. HAM Helsinki

HAM Helsinki in the Tennis Palace showcases Tove Jansson's work in its permanent exhibition. Also includes Moomins and a reading corner for children's books as well as a drawing area. The upper floor has rotating exhibitions, often visually striking. You should always check the suitability of rotating exhibitions for young museum visitors. Kiasma

The Kiasma contemporary art museum in Helsinki's city center, between the Parliament House and the Sokos department store, offers an overview of contemporary art. It sometimes has exhibitions that may not be suitable for small children, but often also visually striking art that appeals to children as well. For more information about the suitability of current exhibitions for children, it's worth asking the museum staff. Kiasma also organizes art workshops for different age groups as well as art activities for babies. The museum is friendly towards children and has created a special brochure for those visiting with kids. Tamminiemi

Tamminiemi in Meilahti, right next to Seurasaari, is the home of presidents and now a home museum. This place may not be the first that comes to mind when thinking of a museum to visit with children, but it's definitely worth a visit - especially during summer when Tamminiemi's courtyard and the ice cream kiosk are hits! LIBRARIES

Helsinki and the capital region's libraries are exceptionally child-friendly places! Read how the library advises young library visitors.

Central Library Oodi

Central Library Oodi, located between the Music Center, Kiasma, and Helsinki Railway Station, is the city's meeting place and everyone's common living room. Oodi is not a traditional library but has built much more around it: under Oodi's roof there is also a movie theater, a playground, a restaurant and café, exhibition spaces, a urban workshop, and much more. As a building, the place is worth seeing. The children's book paradise and Oodi's yard's Finnish largest-mentioned climbing structure are worth experiencing. Long opening hours make it easy to visit. Malmi Library

The renovated children's section of Malmi Library is a nice place for the little ones too. Read more: Malmi Library

Kallio Library

Kallio Library's Attic has a sympathetic children's section, which is a place of their own. Read, play, listen, watch, or adventure in Anni's house. The library also hosts many children's events and BabyKino screenings. The library staff listens with a keen ear to customers' wishes as well. Read more: Kallio Library

Nordic Library

A hidden gem on Kaisaniemenkatu offering children's books and other materials in all Nordic languages, a lovely children's section, and a space for play and relaxation in the midst of downtown bustle. Check opening hours as the library often closes in July and December. It's easy to get here for example from the University of Helsinki metro station. The library closes in July. Rikhardinkatu Library

The atmospheric Rikhardinkatu Library's first floor also has a children's section. The library made the hundred-place list because of its location: it's an easy place to stop by with children while on a city trip to read and maybe draw. Accessible entrance via elevator within the library courtyard. In summer, the library's courtyard is taken over by Riku's Summer Courtyard, which offers fun programs and activities for children. Suomenlinna Library

A small library on the island, a ferry ride away from Market Square. The island library also has a children's section. A good place to stop by during island adventures and see Suomenlinna from another perspective. However, check the opening hours as they vary daily. Read more: Suomenlinna Library

Vuosaari Library

The absolute trump card of Vuosaari Library is its large children's section, which you can't help but notice. The library's location in Vuotalo, right next to the metro station, makes it easy to pop into the nice children's section. Vuotalo also has a book café and Vuotalo's weekly events. A wide selection of books and many Swedish-language children's books as well. Read more: Vuosaari Library

Jätkäsaari Library

A small library with a children's section and the opportunity to marvel at scale models of Jätkäsaari's plans. Next door are harbor cranes, a tower hotel, and many construction sites to marvel at, and nearby you'll find Ruoholahti playground and several other playgrounds. Read more: Jätkäsaari Library

Töölö Library

A classic with the children's section conveniently located on the first floor next to the entrance. Wide book selection and many children's suitable events and a weekly story hour. Around the library you'll find several playgrounds and for example the Sibelius Monument. Read more: Töölö Library

Roihuvuori Library

Perhaps Helsinki's most atmospheric library. Small but all the better for it! At Roihuvuori Library's children's section, in addition to reading, you can play and draw and try role-playing clothes. The friendly staff also seems to be super child-friendly. Read more: Roihuvuori Library

Laajasalo Library

Laajasalo Library is Helsinki's first neighborhood library located in a shopping center, serving young library friends with a sympathetic children's section and often greeting visitors at the door with a wonderful collection of rat plushies. Read more: Laajasalo Library

BEACHES AND OTHER SWIMMING PLACES

Aurinkolahti Beach

Aurinkolahti beach is a long beach lined with a nice beach boulevard. If you're looking for a Mediterranean vacation feel, travel here on a sunny day! Along the boulevard there's a playground, cafés and an ice cream kiosk, several restaurants in the buildings' ground floors, and a grocery store nearby. The beach is partly steeply sloping, so watch this with small children. Aurinkolahti beach is worth seeing! Read more: Aurinkolahti Beach

Kallahti Beach

One of Helsinki's most beautiful places and beaches, with a nice café and playground as well as beautiful surrounding nature that is easy to walk in with children. The location is challenging by public transport, but not impossible. It's worth visiting here for hiking in winter too. During summer's gull season, good picnic spots can be found in the nearby easily accessible pine forest. A Helsinki treasure! Read more: Kallahti Beach

Kivinokka Beach

One of Helsinki's most child-friendly beaches, Maija's classic summer café, and farm animals (operation not fully certain for summer 2019), and a nice walking trail, nature trail, bird tower, and good location between two metro stations. The beach offers perhaps the most urban view of Helsinki. Read more: Kivinokka Beach

Mustikkamaа Beach

A beach so close to downtown yet so far away! Mustikkamaа beach is now more easily accessible thanks to the new Isoisänsilta bridge: the journey to the beach is easy, for example from Kalasatama metro station. The beach is located near Korkeasaari bridge, on the southern edge of Mustikkamaа. The café connected with Korkeasaari ticket sales serves with extended hours, so you can stop for ice cream even on the way back. Read more: Mustikkamaа Beach

Laajasalo Beach

A spacious beach that works well for smaller children too. Nearby is a nice fenced playground, Kiiltotähti playground, and sports fields. Read more: Laajasalo Beach

Kasinon Beach

In Lauttasaari, there's a shallow beach that extends far, where wading with small children works perfectly. The beach also has swings and a large climbing ship with smaller slides suitable for little ones. Lots of open grassy areas (though often with many geese). Next door is a nice beach café (café expansion planned for May-June 2019). From Lauttasaari metro station, Gyldenintie entrance, it's a few hundred meters to the beach. Read more: Kasinon Beach

Pirkkola Plot

A natural shallow children's swimming place in the middle of Pirkkola sports park. The water at the swimming place is chlorinated and changed occasionally. You should pack floats for the smallest swimmers, as it gets deeper further in. For older swimmers, Plot also has a water slide. Sand, playground, small kiosk, and a sheltered swimming place with small children, with no blue-green algae risk. Read more: Pirkkola Plot

Allas Sea Pool

A worthwhile place in front of the Market Square. Heated pools, children's pool, natural water pool, and events for children and families. See and experience Helsinki from a new perspective. Open year-round, children's pool available only during warm months. Entrance fee.

Kumpula Open-Air Pool

An open-air pool with a touch of history, a shallow children's wading pool, and space to play on the grass. A nice place on a hot summer day, popular with families. Near the pool is the playground India, Kumpula Botanical Garden, and Kumpula School Vegetable Garden.

Swimming Stadium

Swimming Stadium is a summer classic with a children's pool and grassy areas for lounging. A classic from the Helsinki Olympic Games.

EXCURSION SITES

Malminkartan Apple Orchard

Malminkartano's orchard is worth a visit in May-June, when hundreds of apple trees bloom in the orchard. During harvest season, you can pick apples from the orchard for your own use. A beautiful and surprising place, like a secret garden. Read more: Malminkartano Fruit Farm

Harakka

The island of Harakka in front of Kaivopuisto is an old army island and now a nature island where nature-themed programs are organized including for children. A wonderful destination for adventures. A shuttle boat to the island departs from Kaivopuisto beach and from Ullanlinnan pier (small ferry fee). Free admission to the island. Read more: Harakka Island

Kivinokka

A Helsinki treasure between two metro stations. A trip to Kivinokka takes you through an old newspaper mill corridor, an old alder forest, and beautiful shores. Kivinokka has its own nature trail, a bird tower, and plenty of good places for adventures. Snacks can be enjoyed perhaps in the Kulosaari Manor courtyard or at Kivinokka's beautiful beach. Inner Hattu

A secret island on the southern tip of Lauttasaari! An island you can wade to and even walk to with dry feet at low tide. The route is rocky, so water-resistant shoes are a good idea or bring spare ones. The island adventure to Inner Hattu may not be suitable for the very smallest, but with older children the trip is a wonderful experience. The island's rocks have beautiful rock carvings. Mustavuori Nature Reserve

The Mustavuori nature reserve in eastern Helsinki invites you to adventure: peek into caves, walk through the forest, jump on rocks, and marvel at nature and animals. In autumn, mushrooms and blueberries also grow here. Through Mustavuori runs a route all the way to Talosaari, so the route is suitable for example as a cycling excursion. Viik Arboretum

Viik Arboretum is located between Viik and Vanhankaupunginlahti. The area has many different types of trees with information about trees and nature, paths and trails in the forest, bird towers, and picnic areas. A nice atmosphere and lots to marvel at, and on hot summer days also good shady spots. In warm months, cows from the Viik Research Station graze on the nearby pasture. Read more: Viik Arboretum

Uutela Cottage

Uutela Cottage is currently closed. A trip to Uutela and a picnic at Uutela Cottage. The cottage is open year-round when cottage hosts are present, and outside seating will be added in summer. The cottage is located next to Skatan Farm, about a kilometer from Kampela Café. There's also a road to the cottage, so the trip works for example with strollers. Uutela Cottage's Facebook page has current opening hours. Around Uutela there are many nice places to adventure: forests, meadows, coastlines, grill area (bring your own wood), nature trail, and views opening to Vuosaari Harbor. Uutela

Uutela outdoor area and Särkkäniemi nature reserve are wonderful nature destinations with varied scenery, archipelago landscapes, and a large stream where you can even spot spawning pike. Around Uutela there are many nice places to adventure: forests, meadows, coastlines, nature trail, and views opening to Vuosaari Harbor. At Skatan Farm operates the 4H association's farm animals. Haaga Alpine Rhododendron Garden

Haaga Alpine Rhododendron Garden is a must-visit excursion site in the first weeks of June: a secret garden in the middle of the forest! The place is also known as Haaga Rhododendron Park. Read more: Haaga Alpine Rhododendron Garden

Roihuvuori Cherry Blossom Park

In Roihuvuori Cherry Blossom Park, you can enjoy pale pink blooms in April-May when the park's cherry trees bloom. The annual Hanami cherry blossom festival in May attracts thousands to the park. Near the Cherry Park is also Roihuvuori's Japanese-style garden, which is worth visiting at other times of the year as well. Read more: Cherry Blossom Park

Suomenlinna

A Helsinki treasure that is also ideal for adventures with children in different seasons. Playgrounds, lots to see and experience, and services and shops. A fun destination even in winter! Visit Suomenlinna outside the tourist season, go to new places, take a trip to Suomenlinna Library or playground, or marvel at the dry dock and fly kites on the island's hills. Kuusiluoto

Kuusiluoto is a wonderful nature destination on Vanhankaupunginlahti. Narrow boardwalks lead to the islet from Lammassaari. Note, however, that unlike Lammassaari, you cannot reach Kuusiluoto with a stroller, so strollers should be left in the parking area on the Lammassaari side and continue with small children for example using a baby carrier. Sheep live on Kuusiluoto in summer, which roam freely on the island. Beautiful views of Helsinki's city center open from Kuusiluoto. Lammassaari

Lammassaari on Vanhankaupunginlahti is an accessible excursion site and new beautiful and wide boardwalks lead to the island. New, beautiful wide boardwalks allow you to hike Lammassaari even with a stroller with a small child or someone in a wheelchair. Along the boardwalks, on the western part of the island, you can reach a new, accessible bird tower. Next to the accessible bird tower is a taller traditional bird tower from which you can spot birds and also cattle and sheep in summer months. A nice destination on a warm day or snowy winter for all ages. Lammassaari is a Helsinki treasure and a worthwhile place to visit, and great to bring other local and visiting friends here as well! Pihlajasaari

A wonderful outdoor island owned by the City of Helsinki, with a ferry connection departing from the Ruoholahti canal. Nice rocks, a wonderful beach, passing cruise ships, and diverse nature - a perfect destination for hot days. The island also has a restaurant. You can also camp on Pihlajasaari. Seurasaari

An open-air museum island with a touch of history, really tame squirrels, and many wonderful adventure places for all ages. A grill area by the festival field. Seurasaari hosts family-friendly Easter, Midsummer, and Christmas events. The bridge leading to Seurasaari is itself an adventure from a small child's perspective. A small beach can be found on the island's west shore. Free admission to the island, entrance fees to Seurasaari Open-Air Museum buildings for adults. Tervasaari

An island between Kruunuhaka and Korkeasaari with a walking connection from Pohjoisranta. Tervasaari has its own playground and is also home to a summer theater. An easy outdoor spot close to the city center. The island's beach offers a nice view of Icebreakers at the Katajannokka pier. Read more: Tervasaari

Vartiosaari

A villa island east of Laajasalo. You can walk to the island on good ice winters on boardwalks, in summer a shuttle boat operates to Vartiosaari, boat transportation offered by the island's café and new for summer 2020 electric boat. Nature trail, beautiful rocks, and old forest. A fun adventure island! The island has summer activities from the Youth Services Center. Read more: Vartiosaari

Talosaari

Talosaari is a City of Helsinki-owned outdoor area about ten kilometers east of Itäkeskus along the new Porvoo road. Husö Riding Center is located at Talosaari, and an outdoor trail departs from its parking area. This makes the destination ideal from a children's perspective: right at the beginning you're likely to see (almost) horses for sure! At Talosaari you can hike well even with strollers and the route leads to the shore with beautiful views of the archipelago. Central Park

The ten-kilometer-long Central Park outdoor area from Töölönlahti to Vantaanjoki offers diverse nature experiences: animals, frog ponds, varied and changing nature, nice places to walk and adventure. A Helsinki treasure! Central Park is home to police horses. Read more: Central Park

Paloheinä Outdoor Area

At Paloheinä outdoor area in Central Park you can ski, sledge, jog, skate, climb at the climbing park... In winter there is a children's trail and skis for rent and a café in the outdoor cabin. Helsinki's only official sledding hill is located at Paloheinä. Read more: Paloheinä Outdoor Area

Myllykallio Bird Tower

In Lauttasaari, at Myllykallio, there's an old bird tower that invites you to peek at views, spot birds, and eat snacks at height. Near the bird tower is also Myllykallio playground. A nature destination in the middle of Lauttasaari, which you can now visit by metro too. You cannot reach the tower with a stroller as fully accessible, but you can get quite close at least via the route starting from Isokaari. Matosaari

Matosaari in Jollas is a forgotten secret: Crimean War ruins, a stately garden's stone foundation of a long-burnt house, beautiful views east to the archipelago, Villinki and Helsinki's city center, plus peace and sea breeze. The island is also home to the Helsinki Sea Rescue Association's base, so you can spot the association's rescue boats at the pier. Matosaari now has walking access. CHILDREN'S CULTURE

Annantalo

Annantalo is a children's art house: child-friendly Skidilä Café, exhibitions, events, hobbies, and courses, plus other activities open to everyone. In summer, Annantalo's summer courtyard is a place to spend time in hammocks, daydreaming or snacking, or enjoying the A-stage program. Music Center

The Music Center hosts children's concerts and events from time to time. A spacious and truly spacious café, good care rooms make the place functional for those traveling with strollers and children. Plus for quality children's culture offerings! Read more: Music Center

Puppet Theater Sampo

A place for children and families with weekly puppet theater performances for the young and a child-friendly, storybook-like Sampo fairy tale café with a playground. Read more: Puppet Theater Sampo

Helsinki Day

Helsinki Day is celebrated once a year on June 12. Programs and events throughout the city for all ages, including children. Read more: Helsinki Day

Arabianranta Residential Area Art

The Arabianranta residential area features many artworks that you can spot while adventuring in the area. For example, Ann Sundholm's Oasis is surely to the liking of children: Three large concrete lions sleep in the middle of Jan-Magnus Jansson Square.

ANIMALS

Fallkulla Farm

An excellent Helsinki City-owned farm where you can admire animals up close and sometimes even pet them. Fallkulla is home to cows, horses, chickens, mini pigs, rabbits, goats, ducks... Free admission to the farm and it is open year-round. Hours and more information: Fallkulla Farm

Haltia Farm

Haltia Farm is a city-owned farm on the border of Helsinki and Vantaa, in the middle of fields. In summer, cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, and a great playground as well as a café and grill area; in winter at least cows, café, and playground. The farm is open year-round. Korkeasaari Zoo

Korkeasaari Zoo is a Helsinki classic, open almost every day year-round. Animals to see in indoor and outdoor spaces, picnic areas, a cottage, play areas, and lots to see on the island off Helsinki's coast. In summer you can reach the zoo by ferry from Market Square and Hakaniemen beach, in winter only via the Mustikkamaа bridge. Viik Research and Teaching Farm Pastures

University of Helsinki's Viik Research and Teaching Farm's cows can be watched in summer on the pastures around the research station. Edible Park

Mustikkamaа's Edible Park is a community urban farming and cultural event center. The park is home to chickens, everyone can participate in farming and enjoy the ready harvest, and a daily important task is garden watering, which you can do even in passing. Herttoniemi Manor Park

Herttoniemi Manor Park is a beautiful old manor park located a short walk from Herttoniemi metro station. The park is suitable for picnics, naps, playing, and adventures. Kaivopuisto

Kaivopuisto is an excellent excursion destination in summer and winter: sledding hills, picnic spots, many playgrounds and ice cream kiosks, nice views of the sea and boat spotting, and during midsummer a bungee jumping platform at the beach. From Kaivopuisto beach you can reach Uunisaari and Harakka by shuttle boat in summer, and by pontoon bridge to Uunisaari in winter. At the top is a magnificent old observatory, completed in 1926. Stansvik Manor Park

Roihuvuori Cherry Blossom Park
